Mashriq, officially known as the Arab Socialist Republic of Mashriq, is a country in Western Asia, bordering the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey (East) to the north, Kurdistan to the north east, Iran to the east, the Arab Federation to the south, and Israel to the southwest. The Levant's capital is Damascus and its largest city is Baghdad.
Mashriq is an unitary republic consisting of 52 governorates. It is the only country that politically espouses Ba'athism. It is a member of the Axis of Resistance, Shanghai Pact and the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation.
Mashriq was formed during the fallout of the Fourth Gulf War and ensuing Oil crisis from the union of the Arab Socialist Republics of Syria (and Lebanon), Jordan and Iraq (and Kuwait). While the state supports total Arab and to some extents Islamic unity, it has not rejoined the Arab League due to disagreements over both Southern Jordan and Yemen.
