Afghanistan, officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (IRA), is a is a landlocked country located in South-Central Asia. Afghanistan is bordered by Pakistan in the south and east; Iran in the west; the Eurasian Union in the north; and in the far northeast, China. Much of its 542,000 square kilometers is covered by the Hindu Kush mountain range. Kabul is the capital and largest city.
In 1996 most of Afghanistan was controlled by the Islamic fundamentalist group the Taliban, who ruled most of the country as a totalitarian regime for over five years. The Taliban were forcibly removed by the NATO-led coalition, and a puppet state was established, but they would continue to control a significant portion of the country until coalition withdrawal in 2021.
5 months later the Taliban would again retake control of the country overthrowing the western backed regime and reestablishing the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. The peace would not last long however as the Taliban itself would split into two main factions, the Reformists and Fundamentalists.
The reformists aimed to modernise Afghanistan with plans to keep many of the changes to education that occurred under the previous government and to increase foreign trade, particularly with the Shanghai Cooperate Organisation. They also planned to more tightly regulate opium farming in response to requests from Iran and Pakistan. The fundamentalists wished to return Sharia law as it had been before the 2001 invasion.
By October 2022 fighting in Afghanistan had resumed, this time in the form of the Second Afghan Civil War. The reformists would ally themselves with the Chinese backed National Islamic Movement (NIM).
On the 29th December 2027 Pakistan and the Reformist lead Afghan government would join the Axis of Resistance. A day later Pakistani and Iranian forces would enter Afghanistan to support the Reformist government. Soon after the Eurasian Union and China would enter the conflict, also in support of the Reformists.
By the formation of the Shanghai Pact in 2031 the vast majority of Afghanistan was under Reformist-NIM control. Lower level insurgence from Fundamentalist elements continues to this day as part of the Conflict in Afghanistan
